Drive Home The Message
New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has instituted a program of zero tolerance for drunk driving and the immediate confiscation of a vehicle when an intoxicated driver is apprehended. Although this appears to be a draconian approach, it is difficult to disagree with it.

If the Mayor is really serious about this matter, and we have no reason to believe that he is not, we have some suggestions for additional deterrent measures which would reinforce his resolve on the issue.

First of all, many gas stations now have convenience stores, which frequently carry beer and other alcoholic beverages. It is completely unnecessary to sell alcoholic drinks at a gas station. It is also a very blunt way of tempting fate against tired, thirsty motorists. Let's make it illegal to sell alcoholic beverages at gas stations.

Furthermore, billboards, which advertise alcoholic beverages, should also be banned. Why should we remind drivers about drinking while they are driving?

Finally, there are too many cars in New York City, and making public transportation as efficient and convenient as possible would be a strong inducement for people to avoid the deadly combination of drinking and driving.
